On the Quiet shores of Es-qui-malt, A Shaman created a blend of herbs and spices that inspired the local natives to grow foodstuffs that it could be used upon. It was discovered that a variety of vegetables tasted better when lightly sprikled with this secret spice. Fish, Poultry, Venison or the ever favorite Steak took on a whole new Zesty flavour when enhanced with a little taste of magic..

The Flourish Urban Farm Day Program is an initiative of Me-Kon Hayes of Binkadi Holdings in partnership with Vancouver Island Autistic Homes (VIAH). It is based on three adjoining residential lots on the 600 block of Nelson St. in Esquimalt, B.C. The idea for the development of the urban farm is to provide local, chemical-free produce within the city while offering a life-enriching day-program. Potential participants include those with a developmental or physical disability, and youth in transition. The premise is for participants to cultivate, harvest and market the organically grown produce in this naturally therapeutic environment providing a holistic experience.
The program that we've created allows participants to interact with and experience the natural cycles of an urban farm.
Farm centered activities include:planting, harvesting, watering, weeding, crafts and food preparation. Experiential participation builds skills and self esteem. In addition community outings and visitors to the urban farm will provide the social and recreational segment of the program.T
They are a small community supported urban farm nestled in the township of Esquimalt. We have created an inclusive environment that welcomes anyone with the desire to nurture life, human and plant alike. Nourishment is the central focus of the garden. Food is grown chemical-free with simple hands on techniques to maintain a sustainable garden.
The garden consists of 50 raised beds, a herb garden and two roof top gardens. Companion planting, crop rotation and beneficial insects are some of the techniques used to maintain the health of the garden allowing for year round food harvest. The choice of plants and flowers that appeal to birds, bees and butterflies in addition to water features stimulate a sensory experience.250-727-6454 flourishfarm@shaw.ca

Gorgeous Historic Cabin & Property
Situated in The Cowichan Valley (warm land) this 14 acres Heritage property owes it’s name to a former owner of the property who used to call his wife the Gem of the Isle. Later on they named the property the same way, because it is a true gem. The old farmhouse was built somewhere around 1898, just after the cabin was built. After many previous owners we, Ben Verduin and Patty John, bought the property in 2001. We were just immigrated from Holland and ready for a new challenge. First we started working on the garden and opened our Sculpture Garden in June of 2002. After that we restored the old cabin and turned it into a great place for people to spend their holiday. After that many other projects have come up, like fixing up the old barn and making trails in our old growth forest.. Today we are still working hard on our peaceful heritage hobby farm and hope our guest and visitors will enjoy it’s beauty just as much as we do. |
